Richly illustrated, detailed report of the scientific results of the voyage of the Challenger by John Murray, one of the naturalists of the expedition. The special objective of the Challenger was the scientific exploration of the physical, chemical, geological, and biological conditions of the great ocean basins around the world to include the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. After circumnavigating the globe, the Challenger returned home in 1876. The voyage was successful and numerous scientific observations in all branches of oceanic research, physics, chemistry, meteorology, geology, petrology, zoology, botany etc. were recorded. The present work gives an account of the voyage, and a detailed summary in more than 1600 pages of the results, richly illustrated with maps, charts, diagrams and plates.
