Lt. Danenhower’s narrative of the wreck of the Jeannette and the 500-mile journey by foot from Ostrov Genriyetta to the Lena Delta first appeared serially in the New York Herald, 1882. This first stand-alone published narrative is revised, corrected and expanded from the magazine serial. Much detail is paid to the ship’s party’s retreat on foot and by boat from the “Jeanette” at 77º15’N 155E in the Eastern Siberian Sea to the Lena Delta. Of the 33 original members of the expedition sent in 1879 from San Francisco attempting to reach the North Pole via Bering Strait, only 13 survived. This very rare and elusive first person account is a captivating and highly informative read.
